I ran my dog, Charlotte at another CPE agility trial September 7 and 8, 2019. She was happy and seemed fine. I had no idea she was sick. My dad and I took Char to the vet on September 27 to have her checked out. The vet told me that her levels were high. My parents took Char to the to the cabin that weekend and she couldn’t go the next step to get into the cabin. My dad sent a text message to Charlotte’s former vet, Jen and she told my dad where to bring her for emergency care.
My parents took her to Animal Emergency and Referral Center of Minnesota in Oakdale, MN. Charlotte had a biopsy on Sunday morning, September 29, 2019. The vet at AERC that was in charge of Char’s care she suspected t-cell lymphoma. I visited Char that night at AERC with my parents and she ate what I gave her and it was very soft.
Charlotte went home to my parents house to relax. Charlotte died on October 1, 2019 and my dad was carrying her upstairs from the basement in her red blanket. Charlotte was a tri color Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and she was 9 and a 1/2 years old. Char’s vet, Jen, Char’s being held by her and I’m standing next to them.

The day I brought you and your sister, Lola, home, I had a vision of what our lives would look like for the next fifteen years. Getting through the puppy years and adding two-legged babies to our four-legged crew. Long family walks, sweet little voices laughing and calling “their” dogs name, and learning how to care for another. Family nap times and lazy Sunday mornings.

As the dream of babies has faded, I could see a future where we grew older, and grayer, together. And maybe there would be another puppy or kitten sibling down the road to add energy and excitement back to the house. But I never envisioned having to say goodbye to you so soon. I never thought we would have one more thanksgiving and not another Christmas before we could celebrate your 8th birthday. I was worried about protecting you from “old dog” things. Prostate cancer wasn’t even on our radar, let alone it having spread throughout your whole body.

Knowing that all we could do was keep you comfortable and give you love was such a hard thing to accept. We don’t give up in this family and we never back down from a challenge. But when the challenge was to let you go, we wanted to give up and keep you forever. But we knew it wasn’t fair to you. It was one of the hardest things we’ve ever had to do, was saying goodbye to you.

We miss you so much every day. Dad misses playing fetch with you and laughing as you run around like a goof. I miss snuggle time every night and the way your ears felt as they slipped through my fingers. Lola misses her litter mate, her best friend, her sniffing buddy, and her Bubby who made sure she was always close by and safe. Our home has a Remi-sized hole in it and hard knowing you won’t pop around the corner or greet us at the door.

But I know Sassy and Daisy and Sam, and especially Uncle Puppy, met you at the bridge. They knew you carried our love to them and made sure you weren’t alone there. You had family waiting for you. And when it’s time, you’ll be there for Trouble and Le Noir, who will likely be just as loud and just as grumpy as they are now.We will take care of Lola for you and give her all the love and snuggles that you would have gotten. And someday, way, way down the road, she can pass them to you and tell you all about the silly things Bubby-cat, Loki, got into and how he drives Mom and Dad crazy. And I know we’ll all be together again. Dad will get to laugh and play fetch while you and Uncle Puppy act like goofs, and we will have all the snugs as I pet your big, silky, floppy ears during family nap times. And we’ll never have to say goodbye, ever again.

You are beyond loved, sweet boy. Both in this life and into the next. Until we meet again. ❤️
