Zeke, my beloved deaf Boxer boy, who just turned seven years old, has faced multiple mast cell tumors throughout his life. His journey has been challenging and profoundly illuminating, deeply impacting our shared experiences. It all began when he was around two years old and he underwent his first surgery. Fortunately, all of his tumors were caught early and successfully treated through surgery alone. This experience underscored the importance of routine at-home checks, which involve simply feeling their bodies from head to toe and everywhere in between and taking swift action whenever anything suspicious is discovered. Early detection is crucial—it allows us to address issues before they escalate and require more aggressive treatments. My experience with canine cancer began with the heartbreaking loss of my Boxer, Gideon, who succumbed to lymphoma at just eight years old. Losing him was devastating, and it deepened my commitment to ensuring Zeke receives the best care possible. I have connected with others facing similar challenges by sharing our story within my Instagram community. These therapeutic interactions have served as important reminders to prioritize early cancer detection in dogs. The support and understanding I’ve received from this community have been invaluable, reinforcing the importance of our shared mission.
